​The Sensory Awareness and Practical Interventions for Autism Spectrum Disorder training is designed to provide an overview of Sensory Processing Disorder in relation to Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Understanding and supporting Families with children with special needs training is designed to understand and
support the needs of family members of someone with a special need.

Sensory Awareness and Practical Interventions for Autism Spectrum Disorder​

​Participants will be able to:
• Recognize the connection between Sensory Processing and Autism Spectrum Disorder as well as ADHD.
• Define 3 types of Sensory Processing Disorders.
• Understand the prevalence in current research and statistics as it applies to Autism in connection with diagnoses.  
• Distinguish between sensory seekers and sensory avoiders. 
• Define the “sensory diet” and its effect on children.  
• Define proprioception, vestibular, tactile, auditory, olfactory, oral and visual as it pertains to the “sensory diet.”
•     Recognize identifiers of sensory processing disorder within the “sensory diet”.
• Explain and choose practical strategies to assist individuals with autism and sensory processing disorder.

Schedule:
9:00 – 9:30: Define Autism Spectrum Disorder, Sensory Processing Disorder, its categories and the connection between the two.
9:30 – 10:00: Research and statistics between ASD and SPD and other relevant diagnoses. 
10:00 – 10:10 Break
10:10 – 10:30: Define the “sensory diet,” current research and the positive effects on children.
10:30 – Noon: Define the categories of the sensory diet, recognize the identifiers and discuss practical strategies to assist individuals with ASD and SPD. 
Noon – 12:15 Q & A
12:15 – 1pm: Lunch

Understanding and supporting Families with children with special needs

Participants will be able to:
• Identify and explore current research and statistics of parents and siblings with a family member with a disability diagnosis loving within their home. 
• Differentiate how the roles morph within the home of people with special needs.
• Explore own assumptions about working with families of children with special needs.
• Identify variables that support family-centered strategies.
• Choose effective and practical ways to support families of children with special needs.

1:00 – 1:30 Overview of current research and statistics
1:30 – 2:00 The role changes within homes of people with special needs and their families
2:00 – 2:10 Break
2:10 – 2:30 Emotional stresses of caring for and living in a home with someone with special needs.
2:30 – 3:00 Identify practical strategies with a family centered approach.
3:00 – 3:45 Practical strategies and resources for families.
3:45 – 4:05 Q & A
